Care for the Earth: Awareness Campaign Organized in Sirigu

As part of the World Earth Day 2022 celebration, commissioned volunteers of the Navrongo cluster team organized an awareness-raising campaign, Friday, April 1.

The ‘Care for the Earth’ activity happened at the Mother of Mercy Junior High School in Sirigu in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.

The campaign aimed to help the students explore the harm and threats caused to the environment, due to the actions and inactions of humans, and to encourage effective ways of restoring the earth which nourishes and supports us.

They took the students through practical processes which exposed the everyday activities of humans which constantly degrades the environment. The students were also taught ways they can reduce, reuse and recycle plastic material.

The students creatively put together messages through drawings, songs and poems communicating and raising awareness on the need to care for our common home.

Two students of the school; Millicent Azuure and Josephine Akazuo wrote and sang a song about the environment which goes:

“My environment and I are friends
She is the source of everything I need to live
As I protect her, she protects me
As I study science, I get to know her better
Good health and long life comes from the environment
Let’s live in harmony and be happy.”

One hundred and seventy-three (173) students and teachers of the school each received a customized earth day book.

The activity is part of the Programme’s advocacy campaign on care for the environment and climate action. World Earth Day 2022 falls on April 22 and is on the theme: “Invest In Our Planet.”
